Our History

Our Roots

J. Stern & Co. builds on more than two centuries of successful banking and investment by the Stern family. The family's roots trace back to Frankfurt's merchant quarter in the 17th century. In 1805, Jacob Stern transformed the family business into a bank — Jacob S.H. Stern & Co. — which became one of Germany's leading banking institutions.

Growth

Over time, the Sterns expanded across Europe, establishing banks in Paris, London, and Berlin. They played a founding role in institutions that endure today, including BNP Paribas, Deutsche Bank, Garanti Bank, and Banamex.

Origin

J. Stern & Co. originates from the family office of the French branch of the Stern family, descendants of the founders of A.J. Stern & Cie. — later known as Banque Stern — which was sold in 1988 to what is now UBS.

Legacy

Today, our partnership continues the family's legacy of alignment, stewardship, and long-term thinking — values that remain central to how we invest for ourselves and our clients.
